Year 7 Transition Journey

At Devizes School, we understand that transitioning to secondary school can be a significant change, and our aim is to make this process as smooth and enjoyable as possible. From the moment you receive your child's secondary school offer, we are committed to keeping you informed and supported throughout the entire transition process. With our monthly transition newsletters, we ensure that both parents and students have all the key information they need, including important diary dates for a wide range of upcoming events. Below is an overview of the key steps we've taken to help integrate our Year 7 students and build their confidence as they embark on this exciting new chapter.

To help ease the transition, we visit students in their primary school environment, giving them an overview of what they can expect when joining us at Devizes School. These visits allow us to answer any questions they may have and help put their worries at ease. By addressing concerns early, we ensure students feel reassured and excited about the move to secondary school. To help us build a comprehensive understanding of each student, we work closely with primary school teachers to gather academic and social information. This allows us to create a well-rounded picture of each child's strengths, needs, and personality.

Our induction programme offers students a two-day experience at Devizes School, where they can explore the school site, meet their new teachers, and participate in fun, engaging activities. This opportunity helps them adjust to their new surroundings, build friendships, and experience a variety of subjects within our school environment.

We know that transitioning to secondary school is just as important for parents. Our Parent Information Evening gives parents the chance to meet staff, learn more about the curriculum, and gain insight into the support services available. It's an opportunity to ask any questions and understand what life at Devizes School will look like for their child.

As well as out transition information evening, we have an additional BBQ Event in the summer term calendar. This evening brings together students, parents, and staff for an informal gathering which follows on from our induction days, with delicious food and fun activities. It's the perfect chance for everyone to connect, socialise, and start building a strong school community before the school year begins.

Since the launch of our Summer School two years ago, this 3-day programme has played a vital role in helping students transition smoothly into Year 7. The Summer School is designed to prepare students both academically and socially, offering a combination of core subjects and creative activities. This experience allows students to build confidence, form friendships, and develop key skills, ensuring they feel well-prepared and excited for the start of the new school year.

Our journey doesn't end when students join us in September-it continues throughout the entire year. We understand that some students adapt quickly to change, while others take more time, and that's perfectly okay. To support this transition, each student is part of a dedicated tutor group that they will meet with daily, building strong relationships and receiving ongoing guidance. In addition, our Head of Year plays a key role in overseeing the whole transition journey.

We remain committed to fostering integration within the year group. To support this, we organise a residential trip, which plays a crucial role in helping students build stronger bonds with their peers. Through team-building activities and shared experiences, the residential helps to further solidify friendships and create a sense of unity within the year group.

In addition to everything mentioned above, you will also have the opportunity to meet your child's tutor and gain insight into how they are settling in at Devizes School within the first term. Our regular communication and ongoing support ensure that you stay informed about your child's progress, both academically and socially.
